Africa-Press – Cape verde. The national deputy of the PAICV (opposition) for the Sal circle, today suggested that the municipality pay compensatory compensation to the ‘hiace’ owners, from the perspective that the tariff will not suffer increases that will be borne by users.
Démis Almeida launched this challenge at a press conference, following the stoppage of ‘hiaces’ services four days ago, since Friday, 1st, which has caused “ huge disruption ” in the normal functioning of the collective public passenger transport system.
“ We are inclined towards a solution that does not matter the increase in current tariffs, because people are, in fact, suffering a huge loss of purchasing power. For us, the best solution, at this moment, is to maintain the tariffs as they are for users” , he pointed out.
“ But finding a way to effectively compensate the ‘hiacista’ owners for, in fact, a huge loss of profits and income that results from an already long outdated tariff plan, which has been going on since 1998, and to achieve this it is necessary that the council has in fact common sense ”, he reasoned.
Questioning the “ silence” of the chamber, Démis Almeida notes, however, that the PAICV is “in no way” defending attitudes towards setting tariffs outside of what the law provides.
“ Owners have every right to demonstrate, to strike, but they must always ensure minimum services because users are not responsible for this situation ”, he reflected, defending the need for negotiations, consideration and balance, which the public passenger service be ensured, at least in its minimum terms, and on the part of the city council there is openness to negotiations.
Given the need to implement a system of public public transport for passengers that is felt in Sal, Démis Almeida said that it is essential to plan these public public transport for passengers and cargo.
“ The chamber must assess whether the system we have serves the island of Sal today, with an extremely important demand, namely on the Espargos/Santa Maria route and vice versa, but also on the Espargos/Palmeira/Espargos route, and on the Espargos/Pedra de Lume route, which does not even have coverage of any type of public transport” , he commented.
In its understanding, the city council must design an up-to-date, modern, contemporary system of collective public transport for passengers and cargo, allowing for the minimum possible costs.
“On an island that has the costs of living that we all know, at a time when we are facing an unprecedented inflationary crisis, in which there is a huge loss of purchasing power for workers, and people in general, we need a modern system of public public transport for passengers on the island of Sal” , he reiterated.
