Santiago Norte: Minister of Education Considers that the Educational System is at its “Peak with Visible Gains”

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Education considered this Thursday, in São Salvador do Mundo, that the educational system is at its “peak” and with “visible gains”, listing the curricular reform of the educational system and other measures implemented.

Amadeu Cruz was speaking at the opening ceremony of the Expanded Council of the Ministry of Education, which is being held at the Carlos Alberto Gonçalves State School, and brings together educational leaders from all the islands, among other national and international partners.

The objective of the meeting is to take stock of the school year, define guidelines for the next school cycle and establish strategies for the “continuous evolution” of the education sector in Cape Verde.

In his speech, the governor highlighted the reforms implemented, especially in the curricular aspect, and other measures that have contributed to improving the quality of education and student success.

On the occasion, the minister thanked the collaboration of teachers, managers, parents and national and international partners, such as Unicef and the World Bank, among others, highlighting the “fundamental role” of these actions in building a quality, inclusive education that promotes the social, economic, political and cultural development of the country.

Amadeu Cruz highlighted the sector’s main achievements, such as the implementation of the curricular reform, considering it the “most comprehensive” in the country’s history.

Its aim is to modernize and align study plans with the demands of the 21st century, highlighting that since 2017 the country has been gradually completing this reform, with improvements in the mastery of languages, mathematics, digital technologies, and preparation for higher education.

“Students who complete the 12th grade today will leave with a better prepared profile, with skills in languages such as Portuguese, French and English, as well as solid foundations in mathematics and technology, including the use of digital tools,” highlighted the minister.

Likewise, he emphasized the “strengthening” of educational inclusion, with measures to reduce school dropout rates, which fell from 6.5 percent (%) in 2016 to less than 1% today, in addition to advances in the structuring of early childhood education, with the goal of universalizing access to daycare centers, currently with coverage of 86.4%, and reinforcing infrastructure conditions, teaching materials and support for the most vulnerable families.

“We are investing in ongoing teacher training, improving school conditions and implementing external assessments to align the country’s performance with international standards,” he said.

Amadeu Cruz also reinforced the government’s commitment to consolidating an “education of excellence” that values national culture and identity, while preparing young people for the global market.

In turn, the delegate of the Ministry of Education in São Salvador do Mundo, Edna Borges, host of the event, highlighted the effort that has been made in favor of education in the country and especially in the municipality, with a focus on offering quality education, with interventions in infrastructure, school transportation, student snacks and social inclusion.

This leader also reinforced the importance of partnerships with the community and local, but also national and international organizations to ensure student success.

The mayor of São Salvador do Mundo, Ângelo Vaz, highlighted the importance of education for the development of Cape Verde, a country that, despite not having abundant natural resources, has made progress thanks to the efforts of its citizens and the Government.

Vaz highlighted that investment in education is “fundamental”, as it promotes social inclusion, reduces poverty and opens doors to progress, emphasizing the municipality’s partnership with the Ministry of Education.

He highlighted actions such as school transport, hot meals and support for vulnerable families, especially those covered by the Single Social Registry, ensuring that no child is left out of the education system.

In addition, he mentioned support programs for children with vision difficulties, as well as basic food baskets for communities affected by Covid-19, reaffirming the municipality’s commitment to quality education and social well-being.

The Expanded Council of the Ministry of Education, which began today, will run until Friday, the 16th.
