Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, today called on Cape Verdean families, both in the country and in the diaspora, to strengthen their educational role, assuming responsibility for the ethical, emotional and social development of the new generations and stated that the integration of public policies aimed at the well-being and strengthening of families must continue to be a priority of the State.

The appeal by the Head of State was made within the scope of the International Day of Families, celebrated on May 15th.

“It is in this sense that I wish to make a very clear appeal today: that Cape Verdean families, in the country and in the diaspora, strengthen their educational role, assuming responsibility for the ethical, emotional and social development of their children”, reads José Maria Neves’ message.

The President recalled that the family is the first place where fundamental values such as love, solidarity and respect are learned, and that it is necessary to ensure that it has adequate conditions to fulfil its educational mission.

In this context, he considered it essential that the State continue to integrate public policies aimed at the well-being and strengthening of families. José Maria Neves also warned of the challenges currently impacting family life, such as demographic changes, urbanization, migration, technological transition and the effects of climate change. In the specific case of Cape Verde, the President drew attention to the low incomes, poverty, inequalities and other forms of exclusion that continue to affect families. “We need to support families. Valuing the family is the path to building a more just and inclusive society, based on the dignity of the human person,” he argued.
