Santiago: Santa Catarina march against gender-based violence and feminicide

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Santa Catarina City Council has called a silent march of regret and indignation against gender-based violence and feminicide for Saturday, 08 of July, in Assomada, which is expected to include the participation of the three main figures of the State.

The announcement was made today, at a press conference, by the Mayor of Santa Catarina, Jassira Monteiro, who explained that this “march of indignation” comes in the wake of the death of Sónia Semedo, better known as Sandra, who was allegedly another woman victim of violence and feminicide.

“The City Council of Santa Catarina decided to invite to participate in the march of indignation the three main figures of the State of Cabo Verde, namely, the President of the Republic, the President of the National Assembly and the Prime Minister, because we understand that public life is made of symbologies and it is necessary to give a clear signal to society that the main political agents of the country are engaged in this fight for civilisation and human rights,” he justified.

Jassira Monteiro, currently the only female mayor of the country, added that her local authority has sent invitations to referenced public figures and Cape Verdean society organisations working to combat violence against women.
