Africa-Press – Cape verde. The islands of Santo Antão and Santiago were the islands with the most active tourist accommodation, at the end of December 2021, according to data from the Annual Inventory of Hotel Establishments. However, Sal leads in bedrooms and beds.

According to data from the annual inventory of hotel establishments, carried out by the National Statistics Institute, at the end of December 2021, 292 tourist accommodations were in operation, 135.5% more than in the same period of 2020.

It should be noted that in this period of 2020 we were still under a strong policy of restrictions due to the covid-19 pandemic, hence the exponential increase due to the recovery at the end of December 2021.

Distribution by islands

Of these 292 tourist hotel establishments that were active at the end of December 2021, Santo Antão had the majority, that is, 69 tourist accommodation establishments, which corresponds to an increase of 23.6% of the total establishments in operation in the country. , in the period under review.

After the mountain island comes Santiago with 65, São Vicente with 56, Sal with 32 and Fogo with 25 active hotel establishments. This represents increases of, respectively, 22.3%, 19.2%, 11.0% and 8.6% of the total.

São Nicolau, Boa Vista and Maio follow with the same number of establishments, 12, corresponding to 4.1% of the total number of active hotel establishments at the end of December 2021.

Brava already had 9 establishments in operation, representing 3.1% of the total.

São Vicente with the highest increase

It should be noted that the largest increase in active tourist accommodation took place on the island of São Vicente, which had 46 more establishments at the end of December 2021, compared to the same period in 2020.

On the islands of Santiago, Sal, Fogo and Boa Vista, there were increases of 45, 22, 17 and 9 establishments, respectively, compared to the previous year.

Houses with more weight

Regarding the type of accommodation, there was an increase in all typologies. Residential establishments were the ones that increased the most at the end of December 2021, with 64 more active establishments in the country, compared to 2020.

Then come hotels (+37), guesthouses (+23), apartment hotels (+13) and inns (+12).

A less pronounced increase, according to INE, was observed in tourist villages, with 5 more establishments, compared to the end of December 2020.

Considering the typology of hotel establishments, INE data show that Residential establishments have become the establishments with the highest weight, representing around 35% of the total, with hotels and guesthouses in second and third places, with 23% and 22%, respectively.

Salt with more rooms and beds

However, when it comes to available rooms, Sal continues to dominate, representing 56% of the total.

Boa Vista occupies the 2nd place, with 19% and Santiago third with 8%.

If we analyze the distribution of rooms by type of establishment, hotels continue to lead with 83% of rooms, followed by residential and guesthouses, representing 6% and 5%, respectively.

It should be noted that the supply of beds was also concentrated mainly on the island of Sal (58%), followed by Boa Vista, with 21% and Santiago with 7%.

The remaining islands offered, at the end of December 2021, about 14% of the total available beds.

The distribution of beds by type of establishment revealed that hotels represent 85% of the available bed capacity. Next are residential (5%), pensions (4%) and apartment hotels (3%).
