Africa-Press – Cape verde. The mayor of Ribeira Grande de Santo Antão, Orlando Delgado, disagrees with the way in which higher education is intended to be installed on the island. In addition to thinking that the Afonso Martinho Agricultural Center would be the “ideal space”, he is of the opinion that the proposed format, divided by the three municipalities of the island, will cause operational problems.

“Having a university divided into the three municipalities will certainly have problems in terms of functioning. UTA made this selection and ended up presenting this solution which, in my view, will have some difficulty and an additional cost that makes no sense”, he emphasized.

Orlando Delgado stressed that it was the UTA who “decided”, but he has the “right to disagree” because, in his view, if there was an “objective criterion” in choosing the location for the university, the Afonso Martinho Agricultural Center would has the “best conditions”.

“There was no dispute between the municipalities”

However, the mayor stressed that “there was no dispute” between the municipalities in relation to the place where the university center would be installed.

“I have always said that the most important thing is Santo Antão, regardless of where to stay, as long as it serves the island”, he clarified.

At the beginning of June, it was announced that the Higher Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies, in Santo Antão (ISCTA-SA), would have its administrative headquarters in the city of Porto Novo.

Regarding spaces for the functioning of the teaching component, an infrastructure that will be provided by the Ministry of Education, explained the rector, João do Monte, who informed that at the level of experimental fields, the Quinta had already been identified. São João Baptista (Porto Novo) and the Agricultural Center of Afonso Martinho (Ribeira Grande).

Another step that is being taken with a view to the effective installation of this institute in Santo Antão has to do with the accreditation of the study cycle for the academic year 2022/2023, a process that is in progress, having been informed to the Higher Education Regulatory Agency. (ARES) the decision to initially offer two degrees (agronomy and zootechnics).
