Africa-Press – Cape verde. Dozens of “frogfish”, a species that is poisonous to humans, were seized this Thursday, in Tarrafal de São Nicolau. The commercialization of this fish is prohibited.

The seizure was made on a net fishing vessel on the Tarrafal pier, after the authorities were contacted.

According to biologist Heidy Medina, it is not known “the exact amount that was caught”, since when the authorities arrived at the scene some people had already taken some of the fish home.

“That’s why we warn the population that the fish has a poisonous toxin, so we don’t advise its consumption or its handling, and anyone who has it at home to discard it”, he warned.

The same source also said that some fish of this species washed ashore, mainly on the beach known as Praianha, so “the authorities are on the ground” to see if they also washed ashore on other beaches in the municipality, in order to collect them. , avoiding health risks.

The biologist also recalled that, in addition to being dangerous if consumed by humans, “frogfish” in large numbers in an area can cause damage to the local fauna.
