In his Official Opening Speech of the XVIII Congress of the UCID (Independent and Democratic Cape Verdean Union), on the night of this Friday, 25th, António Monteiro highlighted the importance of the Event for the future of the Party and the challenges faced as President of this Broken.
He called, on the other hand, for “more unity on the part of all”, so that they can resolve the UCID’s concerns and continue to help in the Governance of the Country.
“The Congress that we are starting today, with this Opening, could be extremely important for what the founders, activists and sympathizers, friends and the Cape Verdean population want to do with the UCID.
If we want a strong UCID capable of helping in the governance of the country, let us not stop at disagreements, let us not stop at indifference”, Monteiro urged.
Even though he did not reach the level of Political Power, to demonstrate the difference of this Party, compared to other Political Parties, the contribution of the UCID, in the political sphere, was valuable, despite the ups and downs.
“When I say that the UCID has served, it is because during all these years of the Party’s existence, we have always made a valuable contribution with ideas and pointed out solutions.
It is clear that the ideas and solutions that we pointed out, we did not have the ability to implement in practice, but they ended up, later, being seized and put into practice. What we want is to have the possibility of being and executing our ideas and solutions for this country”, he added.
Although he “did not manage to get where he wanted to be”, Monteiro hopes that this will not stop Congressmen, because – as he said – the last elections have shown that Cape Verdeans are losing confidence in other parties.
Geraldo Almeida, in turn, recognized the role of António Monteiro in the growth of the UCID and referred to the notorious growth of the Party in the last Elections.
“The growth that the UCID has had in the last 17 years was due to the leadership of António Monteiro. I am convinced that no one would be more qualified than him to carry out this task”, highlighted Almeida,
hoping that, within the framework of this Congress, the UCID will present the General Guidelines for a possible Revision of the Constitution, with a view to improving Collective Life.
The Opening of the XVIII Congress was attended by the Outgoing President of the UCID, António Monteiro; the President of the Jurisdiction Council of this Political Formation, Geraldo Almeida; and by the vice-president, Dora Pires.
In addition to the congressmen, some individuals also witnessed the beginning of the Event, notably the Minister of Communities, Jorge Santos. The Congress started on the night of Friday, 25th, and ends this Sunday, 27th of March, in São Vicente, more specifically, at the Jotamont Music Academy.
