The Minister of Youth and Sports, Carlos Monteiro, assured this Saturday, in Praia, that the Government will reinforce school sports, giving more “life and subsistence” to schools, aiming at the development of sport. In Praia, around 7,000 students participate in the program that started across the country.
This statement was made to the press, at the opening ceremony of the twenty-third edition of the School Games, promoted by the Ministry of Education through the Delegation of the Ministry of Education in Praia in partnership with the Institute of Sports and Youth with the aim of promoting the exchange and the mobility of students both within their municipalities and between islands.
“We are here to reinforce our work in the school games sector, giving life back to the subsector that is school sports, as these games are not only a game, but the culmination of an entire work”, underlined Carlos Monteiro, on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the twenty-third edition of the School Games.
Promoted by the Ministry of Education, through school delegations and in partnership with the Institute of Sports and Youth, the school games are intended to encourage the exchange and mobility of students both within their municipalities and between the islands.
National school sports olympics
The minister guarantees that, in addition to the organizing committee for the games, a technical committee is currently being created which will work until the presentation of the first national olympiads of school sports which will take place from 27th March to 3rd April.
Carlos Monteiro also advanced the holding, this week, of a conference to discuss school sports in order to better understand “where we started from, where are we now and at what level do we want our school sports to be” so that the schools are “hotbeds of talent” and can nurture clubs and national teams.
It should be noted that the 2022/2023 School Games, in the municipality of Praia, had the participation of 7,000 students, both male and female, from primary to secondary education in different modalities, namely, handball, football, chess, karate, boxing and others. .
The event also had the participation, for the first time, of the high school of Salineiro, in the Municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santiago.
It should also be noted that these School Games are also taking place in Santiago Norte and in all the islands of Cape Verde.
