Africa-Press – Cape verde. Speech therapist Jocilene Duarte Fortes advises people to take care of their vocal identity, as the main human communication tool, highlighting the need to seek a specialist in the face of any changes that may arise in the voice.
Jocilene Duarte Fortes gives these guidelines as part of the celebration of World Voice Day, marked on April 16th, to raise awareness among the population about the importance of the voice and the care necessary to preserve it.
“We must take care and ensure, every day, the good condition of our voice, especially those who work with the voice, namely journalists, radio hosts, teachers, priests, speakers, among others. Without our voice we cannot communicate with anyone,” he cautioned.
As for recommendations to protect the main tool of human communication, the expert points to correct hydration, avoiding tobacco smoke, the consumption of alcohol and other drugs that are harmful to health, the pharynx and larynx.
The voice therapist also advises a correct, healthy diet, foods that, as she said, contain more liquids, consumption of fruit, especially apples and lemons, as well as nebulization, both day and night, allowing greater hydration of the vocal folds.
If you experience symptoms of loss of voice, hoarseness, sore throat, fatigue or other signs, advise that you seek a specialist in the face of any changes that may arise.
He explained that, in Cape Verde, teachers are the ones who have the most voice problems, due to the technical difficulty of placing their voices in the classroom, but also the female population, with the appearance of hormonal problems, for example, which go damage the vocal folds.
“Teachers, journalists, even fishmongers have to be very careful with their voices, know how to position their voices correctly, thus avoiding problems with their vocal health in the future. Normally we should do a vocal warm-up to start the day, and a vocal cool-down at bedtime. An important practice,” she highlighted.
On this World Voice Day, the speech therapist calls on people to take care of their voice, as without it we cannot communicate correctly, which can make people become isolated or depressed.
“Being a year in which we are taking precautions for our mental health, for that to happen we also have to have good vocal health”, he concluded.
