Survey to Find out where Cape Verde'S Coins are Stored Starts on Monday

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The National Statistics Institute (INE), in partnership with the central bank, completed the formation of a team that will conduct a survey to help find out where the archipelago’s coins are.

The collection will begin on Monday, will last a week, and will take place in five municipalities, covering a sample of 1,528 residents.

The measure is one of the actions announced by the Bank of Cabo Verde (BCV) to address complaints from the population about a shortage of coins, along with awareness campaigns to put stored money back into circulation.

Drivers, saleswomen, taxi drivers and customers have been trying to deal with a shortage of coins, felt especially in mid-2024, as they reported to Lusa at the time.

The problem has even led to heated discussions on buses and caused losses for street vendors, due to the inability to give change for transactions.

Some establishments have decided to give out sweets instead of lower-value coins.

The survey, which starts on Monday, aims to “evaluate habits” in the use of coins, in order to “better understand the availability, capacity, behaviors and practices of the population”, explained the INE.

Cape Verde has 68.9 million coins in circulation, according to data from the central bank, which issues 2.3 million coins annually.

“The proportion of coins in relation to total cash (notes and coins) is approximately 3.5%, in line with international parameters”, added the Bank of Cape Verde (BCV), which hopes to find answers in the survey to be carried out next week.
