Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Farmers’ Association of Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, in the municipality of Porto Novo, today praised the farmers’ efforts in recovering the yam crop in that valley, destroyed by the floods that occurred in September.
The president of the Farmers’ Association of Tarrafal de Monte Trigo, Manuel Jesus Évora, told Inforpress that, thanks to the efforts of the producers themselves and the support received from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, yam cultivation is recovering in that locality.
“We recognize the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, although some people were left without support, but the farmers are recovering the plots and the yam crop, which is one of the most cultivated products in Tarrafal de Monte Trigo,” he emphasized.
The floods that occurred in Tarrafal de Monte Trigo in September devastated a large part of the yam plantations, and at that time the producers appealed to the Government to support them in recovering the plots.
In November, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment assured that, as part of the plan to recover from the flood damage, the directly affected farmers were being supported in the recovery of their activities.
The delegate of this ministry, Joel Barros, confirmed that the producers were supported in the physical recovery of their plots, through assistance with construction materials (cement) and the replacement of pipes.
The floods that occurred on September 11th in Tarrafal de Monte Trigo directly affected 70 yam producers.
