Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verdean President, José Maria Neves, insisted this Monday that there is political degradation in the country and wants “ senators of the Republic ” such as the country’s former Prime Minister Carlos Veiga to moderate the debate between the main actors .
“ We have several senators who came from various parties and also people who never served in the military, but who had great civic commitment at various times in the country’s life. It is necessary to summon, mobilize these capacities and these skills so that Cape Verde can grow ”, said the head of state cited by Lusa.
José Maria Neves was speaking to the press, in the city of Praia, after receiving former Prime Minister Carlos Veiga (1991 – 2000), one of the defeated candidates (obtained 42% of the votes) in the 2021 presidential elections.
For the nation’s highest magistrate, Carlos Veiga, like other personalities who held important positions, is one of the “ senators of the Republic ”, who should be called to moderate the political debate in the archipelago.
José Maria Neves, also a former prime minister of the country elected with the support of the Cape Verde African Independence Party (PAICV, currently in opposition), said that it is necessary to elevate the debate between the sovereign bodies, but also between power and opposition, between the Government and the opposition and between the State and society.
“ We have to pay attention to the level of political debate, to respect for institutions, for constitutional bodies, and we have to develop an institutional culture so that the country grows even more from an institutional point of view and each body, each public service is in conditions to respond to Cape Verde’s challenges ”, insisted the President, who has criticized excessive partisanship in the country.
Carlos Veiga defends frank and open dialogue
For Carlos Veiga cited by Lusa, who was also president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, in power), there is a “ very tense environment ” in the country, but he understands that what unites the two parties in the arc of power “ is very more than what divides them ”.
“ I think there has to be moderation, tolerance on all sides so that we can make Cape Verde progress ”, suggested Veiga, remembering that the Constitution of the Republic already requires commitments.
“ We have a huge list of matters that require a two-thirds majority, it was intentional ”, he stressed, remembering that as leader of the opposition he helped to carry out a constitutional review in 2010, with José Maria Neves at the head of the Government.
“ The agreements, the understandings that the human resources that run the country can make, the political parties, the institutions, all of this comes to the benefit of Cape Verde ”, continued Carlos Veiga, for whom not all solutions that favor understandings are written .
Regarding the President of the Republic himself and the current Government, the former Prime Minister, Lusa continues, understood that a “ frank and open dialogue ” is necessary.
“ The new times require a lot of cooperation, a lot of balance, a lot of cooperation, so that we can face the challenges that the new times are posing and will continue to pose to Cape Verde ”, advised Veiga, 74 years old, showing himself available to help to moderate the debate.
“ I think there are things that are being done well, but others that are lacking, if I can talk to people, if I can write about it or if I can give my opinion about it, I will and I will do it ” , promised Carlos Veiga.
