Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Portuguese Ambassador to Cape Verde, Paulo Lourenço, passed away this Friday from a heart attack. He was 52 years old.

The Portuguese diplomat died from a massive attack. According to official information, Paulo Lourenço had already died when he was admitted to the Agostinho Neto Hospital, in Praia.

According to the Lusa agency, during the day, while carrying out his duties, the diplomat participated in public activities in the historic center of Praia and at the Portuguese School of Cape Verde.

Several members of the Government, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rui Figueiredo Soares, accompanied the team from the Portuguese embassy in Cape Verde at the hospital overnight, Lusa also said.

A career diplomat since 1995, Paulo Lourenço, aged 52, worked at the Portuguese embassies in Luanda, London, Sarajevo and Belgrade. Between 2012 and 2018 he was consul general in São Paulo.

Paulo Lourenço was born on March 10, 1972, in Angola, and since February 2020 he headed the General Directorate of National Defense Policy, functions in which he negotiated the new Defense framework program between Portugal and Cape Verde for the period 2022 to 2026.

Paulo Lourenço had succeeded António Manuel Albuquerque de Vilhena Moniz as ambassador of Portugal.

The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, mourned the death of the Portuguese diplomat this evening.

In a note published on Facebook, José Maria Neves says that Paulo Lourenço’s disappearance is “a huge loss”.

“A cultured, vigorous and innovative man”, recalls the President of the Republic, who recalls that Paulo Lourenço was “laying new and important pillars in the excellent relations between Cape Verde and Portugal. We are, all of us, infinitely poorer. A great friend who He leaves forever, so suddenly, without saying goodbye, thus violating diplomatic rules. He leaves you forever missed, my friend! , for everything he did, for his irreproachable legacy. My deepest condolences to Portugal, his family and friends!”, laments the President of the Republic.

The government has also reacted to the death of Paulo Lourenço.

Through a note of condolence, the government notes that it was “with deep sadness that the Government of Cape Verde learned of the death of the Ambassador of the Republic of Portugal in Cape Verde, Dr. Paulo Lourenço. An Ambassador with a high sense of State, always attentive and available to cooperate to strengthen relations between Cape Verde and Portugal, at all levels”, reads the note published on the government website.

“In this moment of pain and consternation, the Government of Cape Verde extends its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Portugal and in particular to the family of the deceased”, concludes the note.
