Africa-Press – Cape verde. The International Women’s Day (IWD) was marked by the invaluable contribution” of women in all spheres of life, but also on the challenges that persist in achieving “full gender equality”. José Maria Neves made this observation in a message alluding to International Women’s Day, which is celebrated today, in which he called for a fair tribute to women as “irreplaceable protagonists” in building “more equitable and more inclusive” societies. In his message, he considered that women constitute “the lifeblood” of humanity in all parts of the world. “They generate, nurture and care for life, transform adversity into opportunities, combine sensitivity and determination in the incessant struggle for a more dignified and inclusive world”, he stressed. Hence, he explained, International Women’s Day is a moment to reflect on the “invaluable contribution” of women in all spheres of life, but also on the challenges that persist in achieving full gender equality. She highlighted the issue of inequality of opportunities, gender-based violence and the violation of the fundamental rights of girls and women as barriers to their full development and participation in all spheres of society.

“These are realities that challenge us and demand from everyone an unequivocal commitment to inclusion and equity”, she stressed, stating that the path to effective equality remains unfinished.

In a year in which the country celebrates five decades of national independence, she called for “a tribute” to Cape Verdean women, whom she considers the “true foundation” of the nation.

“In diplomacy, governance and the international projection of Cape Verde, women have played an increasingly important role, contributing to the country’s affirmation in the concert of nations and to the construction of bridges of understanding and solidarity”, she acknowledged.

On this International Women’s Day, the Head of State addresses Cape Verdean women, in the country and in the diaspora, as well as all women in the world, “the deepest admiration, recognition and gratitude”, reiterating “the firm commitment” to work in defense of the dignity, rights and legitimate aspirations of women in the country.
