Africa-Press – Cape verde. The UCID urgently calls on the Government to provide funds to accelerate the recovery of schools in São Vicente, affected by Storm Erin on August 11th. The party states that it has received assurances that the withdrawals have already been made and is now awaiting the release of the funds before moving forward.
The appeal was made today by Christian Democrats MP Dora Pires at a press conference prior to the first parliamentary session of October, which begins this Wednesday.
“In short, we would say that there is an urgent need to improve educational infrastructure on this island. There is a need for IT materials, such as computers, laptops, and projectors, as well as the restoration of furniture, tables, and chairs, which were also damaged. Hence our urgent appeal for the Government to provide the necessary funds to repair all these situations, so that our students have adequate conditions for learning in the classroom,” she urges.
This week’s parliamentary proceedings mark the return of MPs to the Chamber after the holidays. The debate with the Minister of Education, Amadeu Cruz, is a highlight. In addition to concerns about school dropout rates and the situation of university professors and retired teachers, the UCID representatives will demand concrete solutions to ensure the true inclusion of students with special educational needs.
“Regarding inclusion, not all schools are prepared to accommodate students in wheelchairs or children with special educational needs. There is a need to create conditions to include all children and to have prepared teachers. More training for teachers is needed, because it is not easy to have 25 to 30 so-called normal students and, at the same time, one or two children with special educational needs,” she says.
The Minister of Tourism and Transport, José Luís Sá Nogueira, will be in parliament at the request of the MpD. Dora Pires expects concrete answers that convey guarantees to Cape Verdeans.
“We hope that the answers to the questions that will be asked and that are already in the minister’s hands will bring some stability to Cape Verdeans, both regarding air transport and tourism. It is urgent to review the situation of domestic and international transport, as well as the tourism sector, a commitment the Government has been making, but which in both cases requires improvement,” he states.
The parliamentary agenda also includes the consideration of three bills, namely one that grants the Government legislative authorization to legislate on the establishment of arbitration in inheritance matters.
The second authorizes the Government to approve the Code of Administrative Procedure of Cape Verde, and the third makes the first amendment to the Law that creates the Asset Recovery Office and the Property Administration Office and establishes the rules for administering assets recovered, seized, or forfeited in favor of the State.
