Africa-Press – Cape verde. Vendors today described the 11th edition of the Ash Wednesday Fair at Largo da Sucupira as “quite positive,” with a strong influx of buyers seeking fresh produce for the traditional Ash Wednesday lunch on Wednesday, February 18th.
During a tour conducted by Inforpress at the fairgrounds, merchants expressed satisfaction with the sales volume recorded on this second day of the event, which coincides with Carnival celebrations, a factor that has contributed to a greater influx of visitors.
The stalls selling dried fish are among the busiest, as it is one of the most sought-after products at this time of year.
“Today is going well, many people are buying for family meals,” said Deolinda Mendes, highlighting that this year there is greater demand compared to last year, when the product was scarce in the market.
According to the vendor, prices range from R$ 800 to R$ 1,200 per kilo, “with options for all budgets.”
At the vegetable stalls, the scene repeats itself with tomatoes, onions, cabbage, and sweet potatoes among the best-selling products, essential for preparing traditional meals.
Freshly prepared sugarcane juice has also attracted numerous customers.
Jorge Varela, participating in the fair for the third time, assured that the festive atmosphere boosts sales.
“Business is much better than last year. We are the only stall with this product and there is a lot of demand,” he emphasized.
“The prices are affordable, 100 escudos per cup and 500 escudos per liter,” he explained, adding that people look for something fresh while strolling and shopping.
Manuel Tavares, a seller of various products, also highlighted the organization of the event and the atmosphere.
“The fair is well organized, with security and a great atmosphere. You can feel a spirit of camaraderie between vendors and customers, which makes the work more pleasant and encourages people to stay longer,” he said.
For shopkeeper Jacinta Santos, the expectation is that the flow of visitors will continue until tomorrow, the last day of shopping for the traditional family lunch.
