Africa-Press – Cape verde. Pedro Correia, known in football as Ró-Ró, is one of the 26 chosen from Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. The player, son of Cape Verdean parents, was born in Portugal and will captain the host of the Football World Cup, which takes place from 20 November to 18 December in Qatar.
Son of Cape Verdeans and born in Portugal, Pedro grew up in the troubled neighborhood of Casal de São José in Mem Martins, Sintra area. Formed at Benfica, the central defender, who also plays at right-back, had spells at Aljustrelense, Farense and Estoril Praia before being challenged to play for Qatar in 2010.
He managed to face competition from almost 30 foreigners and won a spot on the Al-Ahli team. Six years later he became naturalized and was called up to the national team. At that time it was already known that the country was going to organize the 2022 World Cup and he saw the dream of playing a world cup getting closer and closer.
Ró-Ró (nickname earned for his admiration for Brazilians Ronaldo and Romário) is 32 years old, plays for Al Sadd and has a contract until 2025.
In the national team, Pedro Correia has already played 78 matches, being one of the references and one of the captains of the team led by Félix Sánchez.
The player has already played in Portuguese-speaking games in Macau for the Cape Verdean team led by Lúcio Antunes.
Qatar is part of group A of the competition, along with the Netherlands, Ecuador and Senegal.
