Africa-Press – Eritrea. A year after taking charge of Saudi Arabia’s national team, Hervé Renard has expressed his desire to return to African football. In an interview with L’Équipe, the 57-year-old coach reflected on his career and hinted at a reunion with the continent where he enjoyed his greatest successes.
“For now, I’m focused on our next match against Iraq on October 14. But I know I’ll return to Africa one day. Maybe they’ll call me back, or maybe destiny will lead me there. I hope to manage a national team at the 2034 World Cup,” Hervé Renard said with a smile.
Renard, who famously guided Zambia to AFCON glory in 2012 and repeated the feat with Ivory Coast in 2015, remains one of the most respected coaches in African football. His connection with the continent runs deep, both professionally and emotionally. Having also led Morocco at the 2018 World Cup, Renard later achieved a historic win with Saudi Arabia over Argentina (2-1) in Qatar 2022 — a result he calls “the match of the century” for Saudi football.
Today, as he eyes the future, Renard’s heart still beats for Africa. Whether fate brings him back to the continent remains to be seen, but one thing is clear — his African chapter is far from over.
