Africa-Press – Eritrea. Tour de France 2024 Green Jersey winner and Olympic cyclist Biniam Girmay has been appointed as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) National Goodwill Ambassador in a ceremony held at the central office of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, said that the victories being achieved in the sports sector are the result of substantial investments made in the sports sector.
He further stated that the participation of Eritrean athletes in regional and international arenas not only represents Eritrea but also highlights the country’s meaningful engagement with various societies and cultures, as well as its contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Ms.Nahla Valji, UN Resident Coordinator, said that as Biniam takes on this new role, his ambassadorship will honor his legacy by investing in Eritrea’s next generation of youth, promoting equal opportunities for girls and boys in sports, championing climate action, showcasing Eritrea’s green initiatives—from renewable energy to landscape restoration—and demonstrating how sport can drive sustainable development and the achievement of the SDGs.
Mr. Pa Lamin Beyai, UNDP Representative in Eritrea, stated that as Honorary Ambassador, Biniam will bear the responsibility of addressing issues related to sustainable development, environmental protection, and achievements at both regional and global levels.
Biniam, for his part, noted that the honor bestowed upon him represents the collective vision of the people and Government of Eritrea. He expressed his commitment to exerting maximum effort to fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to him.
