Africa-Press – Eritrea. An Eritrean delegation participated in the 33rd Session of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, held in Geneva on 11 August.
Ms. Nadja Michael, Human Rights Expert at Eritrea’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, stated that Eritrea’s engagement on disability issues is not new. Since the days of the struggle for independence, the country has gained valuable experience and insights regarding persons with disabilities.
She emphasized that the EPLF recognized the importance of disability within society and was among the first to advocate for the equal rights of persons with disabilities.
Ms. Nadja further noted that the Government of Eritrea believes the challenges faced by persons with disabilities are best addressed through respect for individual rights and the equitable distribution of opportunities. Eritrea’s national approach, she said, is firmly grounded in its cultural values and rooted in the principles of social justice, inclusivity, equity, self-reliance, and human dignity.
Concluding her remarks, Ms. Nadja affirmed Eritrea’s commitment to uphold the convention and ensure the rights of persons with disabilities.
