Africa-Press – Eswatini. Rape is a heinous crime that leaves its victims traumatised physically, emotionally and psychologically.

It is a violation of one’s autonomy and a betrayal of trust that can last for years.

In this article, we will explore how victims can protect themselves from perpetrators, the journey of rape survivors towards healing and moving on, coping mechanisms, and the importance of creating a supportive and understanding environment for survivors.

Protecting Oneself: Awareness and Empowerment:

Education and awareness play a crucial role in preventing rape. By understanding the signs of potential danger and learning self-defence techniques, individuals can enhance their personal safety.

It is essential to be cautious of one’s surroundings, avoid isolated areas and trust one’s instincts. Additionally, fostering a culture of consent and respect is vital in preventing sexual assault.

It is also essential to communicate clearly and assertively with potential perpetrators. If someone is making unwanted advances or ignoring boundaries, it is critical to speak up and let them know that their behaviour is not acceptable.

This can be challenging, but it is an important step in preventing sexual assault.

Additionally, parents have a critical responsibility to teach their young ones about how they can protect themselves from potential perpetrators.

This includes teaching them to not being afraid to tell anybody that ‘do not touch me there, or I will report you!’

The Journey of Healing: Triumph Over Trauma:

Survivors of rape face immense challenges on their path to healing.

The process is unique for each individual, but it often involves seeking therapy, engaging in self-care practices, and finding support through groups or loved ones.

Therapy provides a safe space for survivors to process their emotions, address trauma-related symptoms and develop coping strategies. It helps survivors regain control over their lives and rebuild their self-esteem.

A skilled therapist can help survivors process their emotions, work through their trauma and develop coping strategies that can help them move forward.

There are many different types of therapy available, and survivors should explore their options to find the one that is right for them. The Psychiatrist Centre in Manzini provides this service to rape survivors at free of charge and at any time, their hands are open to welcome and offer help to anyone.

Self-Care and Coping Mechanisms:

Self-care is an essential aspect of healing for rape survivors. Engaging in activities that promote physical and emotional well-being can aid in the recovery process.

Regular exercise, meditation, journaling and creative outlets such as art or music can help survivors regain a sense of control and reduce anxiety.

Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition and sleep, can contribute to one’s overall well-being.

Support Groups: Strength in Unity:

Support groups provide a safe and understanding environment for survivors to share their experiences, find solace, and gain strength from others who have gone through similar ordeals.

One Billion Rising acknowledges that healing can be a long and difficult process. however, through resources and support, survivors can move forward and rebuild their lives. That is why One Billion Rising supports over 30 community circles that each have different individuals who are battling with different life challenges.

These groups offer a sense of community, validation and encouragement. By connecting with others who have faced similar challenges and still share their experiences, survivors can break the isolation often experienced after rape and realise they are not alone.

Also, being in that environment where everyone is friendly and easy to communicate to creates a warm sense of belonging that helps victims regain a purpose in life.

Through the healing session provided by One Billion Rising, survivors of violence are given hope to continue with lives.

Addressing Stigma

and Shame:

One of the most significant barriers faced by rape survivors is the stigma and shame associated with sexual assault.

Society often blames the victim, perpetuating harmful myths and misconceptions. Unfortunately, this then makes it challenging for rape survivors to come forward and seek the help they need.

It is crucial to challenge these attitudes and create a culture of empathy and understanding.

This can be done by educating ourselves and others about the realities of rape, challenging harmful stereotypes and providing resources and support that can help in combating victim-blaming and promote a much supportive and understanding environment.

Creating a Supportive Environment:

Creating a supportive environment for rape survivors requires collective effort. It starts with listening to survivors without judgment, believing their stories as they relate and validating their experiences.

It involves challenging victim-blaming attitudes and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. By promoting consent education and fostering a culture of respect, we can prevent rape and support survivors in their healing journey.

Rape is a devastating crime that leaves its survivors with physical, emotional and psychological scars. However, by empowering individuals with knowledge, supporting survivors through therapy and self-care practices, and creating a supportive environment, we can help survivors heal and move forward.

It is our collective responsibility as a nation to break the silence, challenge societal stigmas, and work towards a world where rape survivors are met with understanding, compassion, and justice.

PS: Journey Of Hope for girls and women Eswatini and One Billion Rising Eswatini strongly condemns rape of either genders.

That is why during community outreach services, males are also being included to lectures because nobody deserves to be left out in gaining knowledge about how they can be better citizens.
