Africa-Press – Eswatini. National team Sihlangu are out of the 55/55 double celebrations.

The Dominic Kunene-led side was reportedly earmarked to participate in the double celebration to be held at Somhlolo National Stadium earlier this month. They were reportedly to welcome the Black Mambas of Mozambique in the match to celebrate 55 years since the country gained its independence from the British, as well as His Majesty King Mswati III’s 55th birthday. According to an impeccable source close to the planners of the event, Sihlangu had been pulled out of the double celebration’s plan.

The squad is currently in camp preparing for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) ‘dead rubber’ match against Burkina Faso on September 8, 2023 in Morocco. “The senior national team has been pulled out of the 55/55 double celebration as they will be playing a competitive match two days later after the event away in Morocco,” the source said. The source said they had since penned the national Under-20 squad to play against their Mozambican counterparts on the day.

Meanwhile, Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi ‘Rhoo’ Radebe said his office was not at liberty to comment on this issue as it touches the country’s authorities. “I don’t know anything about that, the right office to talk to is the King’s Office, as they are the ones who are planning on the event,” Radebe said. He further said had it been an issue involving the squad playing friendly matches, he would have given clear comments.
