Africa-Press – Eswatini. Another passenger has died after the spine-chilling accident involving an Isuzu double cab bakkie that overturned and injured over 20 voters at Mpolonjeni on Saturday morning.
This brings the number of voters who have died from the accident to three. The families of the deceased people asked that their loved ones’ identities and photos be concealed for now, stating that there were family members who had not been informed about the tragedy.
Paramedics
A male and female died on the scene of the accident, while police and paramedics were still making means to ferry them to the Good Shepherd Catholic Hospital (GSCH)after the accident that happened at around 5am on Saturday. The accident happened close to the home of former Mpolonjeni Member of Parliament (MP) Jacob Siwela. The third victim passed away yesterday morning. At the hospital yesterday morning, Tandzile Gamedze (19), who sustained serious head injuries and was further operated in the abdomen was found still grimacing in pain. At least two females and the same number of males are currently receiving medical attention at the hospital. Tandzile’s mother, Portia Magagula, said her daughter was supposed to attend a graduation ceremony slated for Wednesday and the accident had dashed those prospects.
Magagula and some of the other family members of those admitted to the hospital, asked that their relatives’ photos be not taken as they were still inform other family members about the accident. “My daughter has undergone an operation in the abdomen and she also sustained serious head injuries and the back of her body. I pray to God that she recuperates,” she said.
According to Jabu Dlamini, who is a family member to one of the deceased, they were informed that another voter, who was a male, died on Saturday night while admitted to the hospital.
“My brother is currently being monitored at the ICU as he sustained serious injuries all over his body. We have also been informed that another passenger has died and the others are still admitted,” she said. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati said a 47-year-old man has since died at the hospital.
Onlookers
On Saturday morning, at the scene of the accident, over 100 onlookers, together with paramedics and police officers from the Scenes of Crime and Traffic departments, were found busy attending to the injured voters. The deceased and injured voters were celebrating the win of their favourite candidate of the Mpolonjeni Member of Parliament (MP) position Kwanele Ndzimandze, who beat former MP Siwela. Meanwhile, in July this year, a 50-year-old female teacher of one of the schools in the Lubombo Region, lost her life after the vehicle she was driving, a Corsa Utility van, was involved in an accident with two other vehicles. The other vehicles were a Toyota Quantum and a VW sedan. The Quantum had pupils on board among its passengers and the VW sedan was driven by a nurse. The accident happened at around 6am at Budvodza-abukhulelwa under Lukhula community.
