Africa-Press – Eswatini. Madlenya held 10-man Ezulwini United to a goalless draw in a lukewarm MTN Premier League match played here yesterday.
The Lubombo-based side has failed to score a goal in over 270 minutes of football; they last scored in the 4-1 win over Manzini Sea Birds in a league game which was on October 21, 2023. The William ‘Baggio’ Gamedze side from that match have recorded draws week in and week out. Madlenya let go of a chance to topple defending champions Green Mamba from the standings as they drew with United, who were one-man short.
Blow
The ‘Stingers’ were dealt a blow five minutes after the hour-mark when talisman Andile Mamba fouled Madlenya’s goalkeeper Dumsani Dlamini, referee Wandile Mamba did not hesitate, but showed him a red card. There was nothing to write home about in the early stages of the match as the sides failed to create clear-cut chances. It was United, who made the first attempt at goal just four minutes before half time. Siboniso Motsa’s long drive outside the box was tipped for fruitless corner kick.
Meanwhile, Mamba could have opened the dreadlock at the stroke of half time, but he took a lame shot at goal after he was cleverly teed-up by Skipper Mphucuko ‘Smoothies’ Dlamini. The score at half time was 0-0. The second half was almost a replica of the first stanza as the teams continued with passing the ball in the belly of the park. This half saw the clubs creating minimum scoring opportunities, which never threatened the goalkeepers. Referee Mamba blew his final whistle to confirm Madlenya as the new ‘draw kings’ of the 2023/24 MTN Premier League.
The results saw Jozi Gobana KaMadlenya failing to dethrone Inyoka eluhlazane from the summit as they cemented the second spot. The two sides are tied on 16 points. It was the same story to Ezulwini United, who did not move any inch in the standings.
