“ANGINASITSA” POLICY POSITIONS ESWATINI AS BEACON OF PEACE

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini’s long-standing “Anginasitsa” (“I have no enemy”) policy has positioned the country as a global symbol of peace, attracting international leaders and officials seeking guidance on resolving complex political challenges.

This was highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Thulisile Dladla during an interview on Eswatini TV’s Asakhe Kwetfu programme. She explained that the policy, originally championed by His Majesty King Sobhuza II, has enabled the country to maintain neutrality and promote peaceful engagement on the global stage.

Dladla noted that the principle has continued under His Majesty King Mswati III, guiding Eswatini’s diplomatic approach and reinforcing its reputation as an oasis of peace.

Neutral Diplomacy Strengthens Global Standing

According to Dladla, Eswatini’s commitment to neutrality has allowed it to engage with different nations without taking sides, even in times of global conflict.

She cited the 2022 conflict between Russia and Ukraine as an example. In January 2023, Russia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov visited South Africa, among other countries and expressed interest in sleeping in Eswatini. His visit raised questions among some diplomats stationed in Eswatini, who argued that representatives from Ukraine should also be given similar access.

Dladla explained that Eswatini’s position remains consistent: the country does not align itself with any side in conflicts but remains open to engaging all parties. She indicated that the King is willing to grant audience to any leader seeking dialogue, regardless of geopolitical differences.

During the visit, Lavrov was reportedly encouraged to convey a message of peace to Vladimir Putin, reflecting Eswatini’s commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Historical Role as a Place of Refuge and Dialogue

Dladla further noted that Eswatini has, over the years, served as a place of refuge and engagement for leaders facing political challenges in their home countries.

She referenced the case of former Madagascar President Marc Ravalomanana, who sought the King’s audience in Eswatini in 2009 after being unceremoniously removed from power. At the time, he sought an audience with the King, who was serving as Chairperson of the SADC Troika.

His successor, Andry Rajoelina, had also been invited to present his position but declined. Years later, Rajoelina himself faced political instability and reportedly fled Madagascar in 2025 amid unrest linked to service delivery challenges.

He later sought and was granted an audience with the King on 6 February 2026, demonstrating Eswatini’s consistent commitment to engaging all parties regardless of past positions.

Continuity of a Peace-Centred Legacy

Dladla emphasised that these engagements reflect the enduring nature of the “Anginasitsa” policy, which continues to shape Eswatini’s diplomatic identity.

She noted that the King’s willingness to engage with all individuals seeking dialogue—regardless of their political standing or past actions—demonstrates a commitment to peace, reconciliation, and inclusivity. The continued application of the policy has reinforced Eswatini’s image as a country that prioritises dialogue over conflict, and unity over division.

Eswatini’s Role in Promoting Peace

The DPM added that many leaders and officials have, over time, turned to Eswatini for counsel and engagement, further cementing its role as a centre for peaceful dialogue. She stressed that the country’s approach offers an example of how diplomacy rooted in respect and neutrality can contribute to resolving global tensions.

As Eswatini continues to uphold the Anginasitsa philosophy, it remains positioned as a nation committed to fostering peace both within its borders and on the international stage.
