Africa-Press – Eswatini. Relatives who had come for their relatives’ post-mortems had to wait for over three hours at most, as there were no mortuary attendants at the Mbabane Government Hospital.
It is a known fact that post-mortems are conducted every Wednesday at the hospital by the police Pathologist, Dr Reddy. Information gathered from reliable sources was to the effect that the doctor refused to conduct the enquiry with the assistance of one mortuary attendant. There was only one mortuary attendant available from Pigg’s Peak, who had also come with corpses from Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital. All the mortuary attendants for the Mbabane Government Hospital were not available. The lone attendant found at the premises cited his religious beliefs in that he could not assist the doctor. Another attendant was reportedly off duty, while the other had to report for night duty.
Some of the relatives of the deceased raised concerns as they had arrived for their relatives’ post-mortems early. Police had to intervene and assist the doctor. At around 12:25pm, Dr Reddy was called on his mobile phone and told that a police officer had been requested to work with him.
Conduct
He arrived at the hospital to conduct the post-mortem at around 12:40pm and started working on the first corpse. There were a total of six corpses which he had to attend to. Director of Health Services Dr Velephi Okello said she was of the idea that the mortuary attendants changed their days off. She said they needed to find out what really happened that resulted in all of them being away. She said she would engage the chief administrator to investigate the matter as he was responsible for the mortuary attendants.
