Africa-Press – Eswatini. Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has called for the development of robust climate project proposals worth at least US$20 million as Eswatini seeks to unlock meaningful climate finance. His remarks came during a strategic meeting with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) African Division delegation, which is in the country to improve access to and delivery of climate financing.
The PM emphasized that large-scale, impactful projects are key to ensuring real climate adaptation efforts, not just theoretical strategies. He also stressed the importance of accrediting national institutions to handle funds directly, saying this would guarantee country ownership and a better response to Eswatini’s unique needs.
“Eswatini should not be sidelined when it comes to climate finance,” Dlamini stated. “We need bold, ambitious proposals and faster access to funds to safeguard our development and energy security.”
The discussions also highlighted the need for a structured readiness programme and a more inclusive climate finance landscape. The Premier expressed dissatisfaction with the current slow pace of project approvals and limited access to funding, despite Eswatini’s minimal contribution to global emissions.
The GCF delegation welcomed the call for greater ambition and reaffirmed their support for Eswatini’s climate goals.
With this renewed approach, Eswatini is aiming high, positioning itself for transformative projects that can build climate resilience and empower communities across the nation.
