PUBLIC SERVICE MINISTRY RECOVERS OVER E982 000 FROM ABSENTEE WORKERS

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Ministry of Public Service has successfully collected more than E982 000 from government employees who were overpaid while not actively at work.

This commendable update was shared during the Ministry’s appearance before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in the House of Assembly on June 30, 2025. It was revealed that the funds were recovered from employees who had received full salaries despite being on study leave at colleges and universities.

Public Service Principal Secretary Mthunzi Shabangu disclosed that while the total amount lost initially exceeded E1.5 million, ongoing recovery efforts have proven effective. “The process is progressing well, especially as these individuals are still employed within the government system,” Shabangu stated. He also assured the PAC that a detailed breakdown, potentially including the names and outstanding amounts of non-cooperative individuals, will be provided in future updates.

In addition to this recovery, the Ministry has also begun reclaiming another E6 million paid to employees who had attended various courses. To date, about E740 000 of this amount has been retrieved, and legal proceedings have commenced against those yet to repay.

Members of the PAC, including Khubuta MP Masiphula Mamba, praised the Ministry’s efforts but urged further clarity and stronger collaboration. Mamba questioned why the SVNet Consortium, which specializes in recovering scholarship debts, was not included in the process.

PAC Chairperson Madala Mhlanga acknowledged Shabangu’s recent appointment and encouraged focus on critical matters, such as improving conditions for security officers under the long-anticipated Phase II reforms. Mhlanga emphasized that unresolved issues could impact national stability and require urgent intervention.

The Ministry’s active stance on financial recovery reflects a broader commitment to good governance, accountability, and sustainable public service management.
