Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is calling for greater transparency and accountability in public spending, following the revelation that E34 million allocated for medicines was paid without the drugs being delivered.
During a robust session in the House of Assembly on July 1, 2025, the PAC met with officials from the Ministry of Health to address the issue. The committee highlighted the need to safeguard public funds and ensure that such allocations serve their intended purpose, improving the lives of the people.
Dvokodvweni MP Sifiso Shabalala expressed concern over the situation, emphasizing the impact on communities that rely on public healthcare. “This amount could have provided life-saving medicines to thousands of Emaswati,” he noted, calling for urgent steps to prevent a recurrence.
Ngwempisi MP Bishop Bhekibandla Vilakati pointed to wider challenges in the health sector, including shortages in medical supplies and the migration of skilled professionals. He urged for a renewed focus on responsible financial management as a means to strengthen healthcare delivery.
Nhlambeni MP Manzi Zwane, who chaired the PAC session, sought clarity from the Ministry’s Principal Secretary, Khanya Mabuza. Mabuza confirmed that the funds were disbursed to a supplier, but unfortunately, no medicines were received.
The PAC remains committed to ensuring that such matters are thoroughly investigated and that corrective measures are taken. The committee also reiterated its support for a health system that serves every Liswati with dignity and efficiency.
Despite the setback, the session showcased Parliament’s active oversight role, and the growing demand for fiscal responsibility that directly benefits citizens.
