Africa-Press – Eswatini. His Majesty King Mswati III has been elected Deputy Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, commonly known as the Troika.

This is a regional body tasked with promoting peace and security in Southern Africa.

The election took place during the 45th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government yesterday. His Majesty will deputise His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of Malawi, who was elected Chairperson for the 2025–2026 term. The King is set to assume the Chairmanship for the 2026–2027 term.

In accepting the role, His Majesty expressed gratitude to SADC leaders for their confidence in him and the Kingdom of Eswatini. He pledged to work diligently to uphold the Troika’s principles and promote peace across the region.

Reacting to this important responsibility for the king and country, the minister for Foreign Affairs and international cooperation, Pholile Shakantu, described His Majesty’s election as Deputy Chairperson of the SADC Organ as not just an honor for Eswatini.

“It is an opportunity for our Kingdom to take a leadership role in shaping a secure and prosperous Southern Africa. As we prepare for the chairmanship in the coming year, we are committed to fostering regional cooperation and addressing the challenges we face together as a region,” she said.

The minister highlighted that with His Majesty’s collaborative approach to dispute resolution, the country is confident that he will enhance the peace and stability of the region.

“Under His Majesty’s guidance, we see Eswatini playing a significant role in promoting dialogue among member states, fostering a cooperative environment where concerns can be discussed and addressed proactively.”

“This position also presents a platform for Eswatini to address pressing regional issues such as political stability, conflict resolution, and security threats, ensuring a holistic approach to peace and development in the region,” explained minister Shakantu.

Coincidentally, this appointment occurs in Madagascar, where His Majesty previously played a pivotal role as Chairperson of the Troika from 2010 to 2011. During that period, the organ initiated a roadmap that led to a peaceful resolution to the political conflict that began in 2009 with the ousting of then-President Marc Ravalomanana.
