Africa-Press – Eswatini. The President of Zimbabwe Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa, has formally handed over the SADC Chairmanship to the President of Madagascar Andry Rajoelina.
This took place at the 45th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) yesterday.
In a heartfelt moment, President Mnangagwa passed the SADC Chairmanship to President Rajoelina, expressing confidence in his leadership to advance the regional integration agenda. “I am confident that under President Rajoelina’s leadership, SADC will advance our shared vision,” he said, thanking member states for the cooperation he received during his tenure. He also extended best wishes to His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of Malawi, for his ongoing regional contributions.
President Mnangagwa concluded by reaffirming the collective duty to build a prosperous SADC through unified efforts. “No one else will build it for us,” he declared, calling for fruitful deliberations to advance the region’s aspirations. His message aligns with Eswatini’s dedication to regional integration, particularly through initiatives like intra-regional trade and infrastructure development.
The SADC Chairmanship rotates annually among member states, with the elected head of state or government leading the organisation’s agenda for a one-year term. The Chairperson oversees regional initiatives, fosters cooperation, and drives the implementation of SADC’s Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (2020–2050). President Mnangagwa, who assumed the role in August 2024, steered SADC towards advancing industrialisation and innovation.
