Africa-Press – Eswatini. From rural beginnings to global ambition, Temaswati Vilakati is boldly reshaping the fashion scene in Eswatini and beyond.
In a world where trends shift constantly and authenticity often feels like a luxury, Vilakati is redefining fashion as a tool for storytelling and cultural expression. “Fashion for me is not just clothing,” she explains. “It’s about telling stories, bridging cultures, and creating a movement that speaks to the heart.”
Born in Bhunya, she completed her early education locally before moving to Mbabane for high school. Her true journey into fashion began at the Bloemfontein Fashion Academy, where she refined her skills and graduated ready to leave a mark. Growing up in a community where creativity was rarely seen as a career, she remembers, “My mom used to sew not for profit but for pride. I didn’t realize it then, but I absorbed stories through fabric, and that’s where I often reflect.”
Breaking into the fashion world was not easy. Guided by her aunt Mavis, who recognized her potential, Vilakati combined formal education with self-taught techniques, relying on YouTube tutorials, thrift store experiments, and countless sketches. “I didn’t need to network with industry insiders,” she says. “I just had to perfect my craft and trust my vision.”
Facing skepticism as a young designer, she recalls, “When I pitched my first collection, people asked, ‘Aren’t you too young for this?’ But I learned that setbacks are stepping stones, and persistence always creates opportunity.” Her designs are deeply personal and culturally inspired, amplifying stories rather than imitating them.
Her recent collection celebrates young people navigating identity, diaspora, and belonging. “We are all trying to be understood, not just for how we look, but for who we are,” she explains. Each piece invites conversation, blending versatility with cultural storytelling.
For young dreamers, Vilakati shares this advice: “Your story is your superpower. Don’t wait for permission—opportunities rarely knock; sometimes you must build the door yourself. Doubt will come, but so will growth.”
Through her work, Temaswati Vilakati is not just designing clothes; she is connecting hearts and expanding perspectives. Her journey proves that vision, grit, and heart can turn dreams into something unforgettable.
