Prime Minister Praises Catholic Church'S Development Work

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Catholic Church has been praised for its role in supporting development in Eswatini while preaching the gospel. The Inter Regional Meeting of Catholic Bishops of Southern Africa officially opened at Esibayeni Lodge, where the Prime Minister, Russell Mmiso Dlamini, was represented by the Minister for Education and Training, Owen Nxumalo.

Speaking on behalf of the Prime Minister, the Minister for Education and Training, Owen Nxumalo, highlighted that the Catholic Church is a key government partner in education, health, and social services.

Locally, the Church runs 47 primary schools, 13 high schools, a nursing college, and a vocational centre for people living with disabilities. His Majesty King Mswati III has assigned the Government and the Catholic Church to transform the nursing college into a Catholic University.

The Church also operates one hospice, seven clinics, and one hospital. The Government and the Church recently collaborated to build a new Out Patient Department at the Good Shepherd Hospital. The Church contributed E1.6 million towards the E18 million project, while the Government provided E15 million.

Prime Minister Dlamini also mentioned that a boarding hostel is being built at St. Joseph’s Mission for students living with disabilities. He said the Government chose this location because St. Joseph’s is a national reference point for disability care.

In addition, the Prime Minister highlighted the Church’s work in helping the poor, migrants, and refugees through organisations such as Caritas and Cabrini Ministries.He concluded by emphasising the Church’s important role in improving the lives of Eswatini citizens.
