Africa-Press – Eswatini. The National Commissioner of Police, Vusi Manoma Masango, has praised the Royal Eswatini Police Service’s Digital Forensic Unit for its pivotal role in fighting cybercrime.

He was represented at the launch of the National Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2025 by Deputy National Commissioner Mumcy Dlamini at the Happy Valley Hotel, Ezulwini.

Dlamini said the Digital Forensic Unit, alongside a special cyber task team, has transformed REPS’ ability to investigate and dismantle online fraud, including facata scams and mobile money theft. The team has already made 87 arrests and submitted 528 criminal dockets to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“The Digital Forensic Unit has been a game-changer, enabling us to recover digital evidence and take down complex fraud operations quickly and efficiently,” she said.

REPS shared shocking statistics for the period September 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025, revealing that over E8.5 million was involved in cyber-related crimes. The losses came from mobile money fraud, fake e-wallet schemes, online loan scams, and social media rental scams underscoring the scale of the digital threat.

Dlamini urged citizens, businesses, and institutions to adopt strong cybersecurity practices and take advantage of free online training offered by the Ministry of ICT and ESCCOM. She noted that cybercriminals have shifted from street-level crime to operating from behind computer screens, making awareness and vigilance crucial.

The launch, themed “Secure Eswatini, Be Safe Online,” brought together government officials, law enforcement, financial institutions, private sector representatives, and media, reflecting the shared responsibility in tackling cybercrime.

“Through training, partnerships, and awareness campaigns, REPS is cultivating a culture of cyber vigilance nationwide,” Dlamini said, praising the Digital Forensic Unit for leading the charge.

The event highlighted Eswatini’s commitment to protecting citizens and businesses in the digital age, with the Digital Forensic Unit at the forefront of the effort.
