Minister Confirms Arrival of 188800 FMD Vaccines

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini is making significant progress in the fight against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), with no new infections reported in areas previously affected, including Hluti, Lavumisa, and Lubulini.

Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Mandla Tshawuka, announced that 188 800 doses of FMD vaccines have arrived in the country and are being deployed to protect livestock in affected areas. He also confirmed that specialists from the Vaccination Institute of Botswana (BVI) are in Eswatini to assist with the vaccination campaign, providing expert support to curb the spread of the disease.

“The vaccination drive is ongoing, and we are encouraged by the results so far,” Minister Tshawuka said. “We remain vigilant as new cases were recently detected in Mambane, where cattle entering from South Africa showed signs of infection.”

The Minister explained that these new cases highlight the importance of following FMD movement restrictions. Some cattle carried dual brands from both South Africa and Eswatini, complicating containment efforts.

The Principal Secretary for Ministry of Agriculture, Sydney Simelane, emphasized the need for cooperation from farmers. “Unauthorized livestock movements increase the risk of spreading FMD,” he said. “We urge all Emaswati to work with the Ministry to keep their herds safe.”

PS Simelane also addressed local vaccine production, noting that the short shelf life of FMD vaccines makes in-country production challenging. “It is a significant investment, but we continue to explore sustainable solutions while relying on expert support from regional partners like BVI.”

On livestock safety near roads, Minister Tshawuka confirmed discussions with chiefdoms to protect the fencing measures to be placed that will prevent accidents caused by livestock in the roads. Color-coded fences are being considered for easier monitoring and maintenance.

With strong vaccination efforts, expert support, and community cooperation, Eswatini continues to make strides in controlling FMD and protecting its livestock industry.
