Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (DPMO) has commenced the distribution of farming inputs to 60 child-headed households across Eswatini, following recent training on maize and bean production, in a move aimed at strengthening food security and promoting household self-reliance.

The distribution comes at the perfect time, with recent rains having made the soil ideal for ploughing and planting. Each household is receiving two bags of fertilizers, one bag of LAN, one 10kg bag of maize seed, and three hours of tractor hire. 50 kilograms of lime is also expected to be distributed soon.

During the workshop, participants were also trained on agribusiness skills to help them manage their farming as small enterprises. They learned about proper record-keeping, financial management, and basic marketing strategies to ensure long-term sustainability. This approach not only empowers them to feed their families but also to participate meaningfully in the local agricultural economy.

Hhohho and Lubombo regions have already been covered, while Shiselweni and Manzini regions are next in line for distribution next week. With the right tools and timely rains, the beneficiaries are expected to achieve good harvests, reduce dependency on food aid, and improve their livelihoods.

The initiative forms part of the Child-Headed Households (CHH) programme, which supports families through livestock farming, backyard gardens, fruit tree planting, household fencing, and water harvesting systems such as tanks and gutter installations. This year, each household will cultivate half a hectare, benefiting from tractor services provided under the government subsidy programme.

Through this effort, the DPM’s Office continues to promote sustainable livelihoods, empower vulnerable families, and strengthen Eswatini’s food security.
