Nothando Makhanya, one of Eswatini’s promising stars in acrobatic rock’n’roll dance, has vowed to make her country proud at the upcoming WFADS Acrobatic Rock’n’Roll World Cup in Moscow. With a heart full of determination, she expressed immense excitement as she prepares to represent Eswatini on the international stage.
“I am so happy. I promise well representation at the World Cup,” Makhanya stated confidently, her enthusiasm radiating as she discussed the importance of the competition. Her words reflect the dedication and hard work that she and her dance partner have invested in their preparation. “My partner is very competitive. My muscles are aching,” she admitted, emphasizing the intensity of their rigorous training regimen.
This World Cup marks Makhanya’s first experience competing internationally, an opportunity she views not just as a competition but as a significant milestone in her career. “This is my first time competing internationally,” she revealed, highlighting the event’s importance for her personal and professional growth.
Supporters back home have rallied around the team, with local sponsor Macford Sibandze urging the dancers to carry the nation’s pride with them. “It’s all about Eswatini first. Go and hoist the Eswatini flag. We are behind you,” Sibandze encouraged, underscoring the significance of national representation on a global platform.
Behind the scenes, the dancers are guided by Nonsika Lukhele, ballet coach at Sisci Studios, who has overseen their preparation with care and enthusiasm. Lukhele describes the sport as a unique blend of gymnastics, ballet, and cultural dance, creating a dynamic and expressive performance style that challenges the dancers both technically and artistically.
“The sport is a unique combination of gymnastics, ballet, and other dance genres, offering students a dynamic platform to develop both technical skill and artistic expression,” Lukhele explained. She also highlighted the opportunity for the dancers to incorporate African cultural elements into their routines, enhancing their visual appeal while serving as a powerful expression of national identity.
This blending of styles allows the Eswatini dancers to stand out in the international competition, promoting both cultural pride and artistic innovation. Lukhele expressed pride in her team’s achievements, noting the relentless hard work that led to their qualification for the World Cup. “We are tired, but against all odds, God has been great. Let’s make this a little bit easier for our country,” she said, acknowledging the physical demands of their preparation while emphasizing their unwavering commitment to representing Eswatini with honor.
As the countdown to Moscow begins, Makhanya and her team represent not just their skills but the dreams and aspirations of a nation eager to shine on the global stage.
