Africa-Press – Eswatini. King Mswati’s forty (40) years on the Throne and Birthday celebration’s budget has accumulated from R50million to over R100million and, will form part of the National Budget to be delivered by Finance Minister Neal Rijikernberg next week.
Mswati who ascended to the Throne on 25th April 1986, will on Saturday 25th April 2026 celebrate 40 years on the Throne and the venue is yet to be announced by the King through the Ministry of Home Affairs.
When asked by this publication if the over R100million will be sourced from public funds, King’s Spokesperson Percy Simelane said even though he was not aware of the total budget, the King has been reluctant to ‘touch’ public funds for such events amid economic constraints.
Simelane said after the King decided to stop celebrating his Birthday as a way of avoiding to ‘touch’ public funds, businesses within the private sector offered to fund the event and assist him through the Ministry of Home Affairs.
“I wouldn’t be sure of the sum total budget because it’s done away from my office. It is the ministry of Home Affairs that is responsible for national events such as the King’s Birthday, the Reed Dance and Incwala. Of late, however the King’s birthday is privately sponsored. The private sector voluntarily registered their wish to continue with it when the King decided to abandon it because of economic constraints at the time,”‘said the King’s Spokesperson.
But the over R100million has been included in the National Budget leaked and it has been disclosed that, the contributions from the businesses within the private sector will then be included in the budget.
Finance Minister Neal Rijikernberg is highly expected to deliver the National Budget next week after the King officially opened Parliament on Friday.
