Africa-Press – Eswatini. Capital city giants Mbabane Highlanders are on the verge of securing a partnership with DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Tshwane-based side is said to have shown interest to engage in exchange programmes with the black and white ensemble alongside rivals SuperSport United and Marumo Gallants.

The CAF Confederation Cup envoys played two practice matches against Sundowns yesterday at the Royal Marang Sports Palace in Rustenburg as part of their on-going international camp in South Africa.

The crowd-pullers are set to play two more practice matches against Gallants and SuperSport United this afternoon.

Highlanders boss Ally Kgomongwe said they were currently in talks with three DStv premiership sides for exchange programmes.

“We are currently in discussion with Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport and Gallants over possible partnerships. I can safely say the three teams have shown interest to come to Eswatini. This will help improve the standard of football in the country,” he said.

The Pretoria-based businessman said they would formally inform the Eswatini Football Association and the Premier League of Eswatini about the proposed partnership with the SA teams.

“We want to do things the proper way and will soon meet the Eswatini football authorities on the developments and we hope the talks will yield positive results.” He said he was happy with the progress as they would learn a lot from the SA teams.

“These are just practice games as we are preparing for the start of the new season. Highlanders will also be representing the country in the CAF Confederations Cup and these games will help gauge our readiness for Africa,” he said. Kgomongwe said he was happy with the players’ attitude as they showing determination at training.

“We want to prepare well for Africa as we want to compete and not just add numbers. We are aware it will not be easy but we will do our best.”

Meanwhile, the team’s Public Relations Officer Mandla Madonsela thanked Kgomongwe for facilitating the international camp.

“We are very grateful to our director for his efforts to improve the team through the international practice matches. Such games will help the team prepare adequately for the Confederation Cup,” he said. Madonsela confirmed that they would play two practice matches against SuperSport and Gallants today.

“These games are meant to help the players gain the needed exposure.”

Highlanders will return to continental football for the first time since 2011 under the guidance of South African mentor Selaotse’Sly’ Mosala.
