Africa-Press – Eswatini. Legendary gospel singer Sipho “Big Fish” Makhabane has pledged E13,000 to sponsor 100 elderly participants aged 65 and above to take part in the 5km race at the Yesuka Twe Half Marathon, set for May 2 at Zakhele Sports Ground, with registration closing on April 27.
Makhabane said the contribution will cover elderly participants who will either run or walk the 5km category, as part of efforts to promote active ageing and healthy living. He linked the gesture to his personal milestones, marking his 60th birthday and a music career spanning 40 albums, which has earned him multiple awards across the gospel industry.
The gospel icon said his youthful appearance often surprises many, attributing it to a disciplined lifestyle that includes daily exercise. He noted that supporting the elderly to remain active is a cause close to his heart, as physical activity plays a key role in maintaining good health.
VOC Station Director, Bishop Zachariah Mthethwa, welcomed the donation, describing it as impactful beyond the race itself.
“We are so grateful to Sipho ‘Big Fish’ Makhabane for his kind contribution, enabling 100 elderly people to participate in the 5km race organised by VOC Radio Station. This donation is more than just support for the Station, it is therapy for the elderly, as it will improve their health,” he said.
Mthethwa called on businesses, churches and the private sector to come on board and support the initiative, highlighting its role in bringing communities together. He also encouraged emaSwati to take part in the event or contribute financially, noting that continued support has sustained the marathon since its inception.
Elderly participants are required to register by calling 7602 8122. Registration will be conducted on a first come, first served basis, with a valid national identification document required. The deadline for registration is April 27, 2026.
The Yesuka Twe Half Marathon will be held on May 2, 2026, at Zakhele Sports Ground in Manzini, starting at 6:00am.
