Africa-Press – Eswatini. Business Eswatini (BE) has expressed deep appreciation to the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) for the establishment of the Malagwane Cooling Station, a development credited with significantly reducing accidents along the notoriously dangerous Malagwane Hill.

Located at Mangwaneni, where Malagwane Hill begins, the station was launched in 2019 and has since helped to improve road safety by providing a controlled stop for heavy vehicles before they descend the steep hill. Business Eswatini organised a small appreciation ceremony at the site to formally acknowledge the impact of the initiative.

The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including Police National Commissioner (NatCom) Vusi Manoma Masango, Business Eswatini CEO E. Nathie Dlamini, Southern Star Logistics Solutions Chairman Wayne Lavendale, Deputy National Commissioner Wendy Hleta, and Hhohho Regional Commissioner Sikhumbuzo Fakudze.

Business Eswatini highlighted the fact that the cooling station not only prevents fatal accidents but also contributes to business continuity by ensuring the safe arrival of goods and protecting lives. The improved safety conditions have fostered a more secure and stable business environment, enabling more efficient trade and opening up opportunities for employment.

The organisation acknowledged the importance of balancing constructive criticism with recognition of good initiatives. While businesses often raise concerns about operational challenges in the country, BE emphasised the value of showing gratitude when public institutions take steps that benefit the economy and society.

During the event, traffic police officers received gifts including flasks and reflector hats, while NatCom Masango was presented with a certificate of appreciation. Southern Star’s Chairman Lavendale also pledged additional support by promising to install traffic lights at the cooling station to enhance communication between police and truck drivers. He noted that while there was initial resistance from drivers, the benefits of reduced wear and tear and increased safety have become evident.

Police leadership welcomed the gesture, stating that such recognition helps strengthen relations between law enforcement and stakeholders. They also recalled the 2014 Malagwane tragedy involving 24 vehicles, which had prompted government action and ultimately led to the station’s creation.
