Planning
“Myself and the comedy industry are left in shambles with no room to hide. The pain is unbearable, especially because I was with him in the morning, planning to be with each other in the evening. He left without saying goodbye, and I am still in shock and deep pain,” said Gedlembane. The locally renowned comedy duo of Gogo Eswatini and S’lwane also had a few words to share. In a statement that was released by the pair, they said, “Gogo Eswatini and S’lwane join the people of Eswatini in mourning the loss of one of their finest thespians ever, Lungelo ‘Smallz The Comedian’ Gina. As a brother, creative partner-par excellence, and an industry doyen, whose innate excellence and natural talent laid the perfect foundation for our very own brand of artistic excellence, we remain eternally honoured to have had the rare opportunity to run our amazing talent race with him, to have learned from him, and, most importantly, to have shared the stage with him more than once. As we mourn in sync with the heavens welcoming their next superstar, we pray God comforts the Gina family and strengthens them as they navigate the traumas of this dark cloud. Rest in peace, Magadlela.” read the statement.
S’lwane went on and shared with this publication that he was still in shock and disbelief that Smallz was no more. “We have grown together and shared so many moments to the extent that he was like a younger brother to me. He has left me with this deep wound, which I don’t know how I will fill,” said the comedian. Also visibly shattered and saddened was Philani Mpanza, who is the former manager and business partner of the late comedian, who said: “It is unfortunate that I have to improvise for this comment and search for non-existent words at this time. But I am beyond shattered at this loss of not just a mega-talent and pioneer, but of a brother and friend for life.
Strength
It is a loss that will haunt me for as long as I live, but as one tries to live on, we pray God comforts his family and gives them all the strength they need every day. Thank you for your magic, Magadlela. Rest in peace, my brother.” More of his industry friends shared, including Nhlanhla Ngwenya and Sibusiso ‘MrSey’ Gwebu. Ngwenya said: “We are still shocked by the passing of Smallz The Comedian. I have known and worked with him for some time now. He was more like a brother and friend to me. In him, the entire entertainment industry has lost such a gem. May God comfort his family, friends, and everyone close to him during this difficult time.” Gwebu highlighted his time with the comedian, sharing all their fondest memories.
“Smallz was more than just a co-worker to me. He was also a friend and a relative in a way because his mother is a Gwebu, so he used to call me ‘Malumz’ and I called him ‘Mshana’. We first met in 2014 or so, when he was still a pupils at Manzini Nazarene High School. I was there for a comedy performance as ‘MSey,’ and I was touring schools with Mr Kangaroo. Smallz introduced himself to me and shared his aspirations of being an actor. We then met again at the 2016 LOL Comedy Competition, and I was so excited to see him compete and win. That’s when he told me more about himself and wanted to work with me, as I was still doing comedy by then. I started searching for shows that would feature him to push his brand; we had the best time,” said Gwebu.
This widely renowned comedian, celebrated for his wit and humour, met an untimely end in a hospital following a devastating car accident that occurred on a Tuesday. Grieves
As the public grieves this substantial loss, further updates about the incident and his enduring legacy are expected. These updates will provide an opportunity for fans and the industry to honour and celebrate the remarkable life and career of this extraordinary comedian. The late comedian was a highly acclaimed comedian, earning multiple awards for his work in the profession. He was known as a devoted entertainer, committed to satisfying all your laughter needs. For a significant period, comedy in the Kingdom of Eswatini was not regarded as a serious art form.
Smallz, the comedian, however, blazed a trail through sheer dedication and hard work. He proudly represented his country on both local and international stages, earning recognition as one of the finest comedians in the industry. The comedy scene in Eswatini had long remained in the shadows, with little attention. It’s only recently that we’ve witnessed a growing number of individuals from Eswatini entering the comedy field. In more recent developments, we’ve witnessed comedy shows selling out as a growing number of people now show a keen interest in this form of entertainment.
He began his journey with a group called Pelepele, where he performed in a drama role as a ‘budding actor.’ His career later led him to become a member of S’dleke Entertainment House, based at Ludzeludze, where he acquired the nickname ‘S’bhintjontjo.’ He regarded this as a pivotal platform for honing his skills as a performer and becoming a well-rounded artist. His experiences in debating and choir activities during his school years in 2015 also contributed to his development. Smallz eventually decided to participate in a South African comedy show called LOL, an initiative pioneered by Macford Sibandze, a former Manzini North Member of Parliament (MP). During this phase, Smallz faced substantial challenges that tested his abilities. He revealed that the name ‘Smallz’ was bestowed upon him by a classmate, Tsepo Maseko, as he used to be quite petite during his earlier days.
