Africa-Press – Eswatini. Young writers from 12 schools celebrated for excellence in thought and expression
The Rubicon Essay Writing Competition crowned its brightest stars, with Duze High School’s Silindelewena Dlongolo emerging as the overall champion. Dlongolo impressed judges with a stellar 89% score, earning herself a brand-new HP laptop courtesy of Computronics. Her victory was made sweeter by also winning the People’s Choice Award through Facebook votes, for which she received a hamper from Imisebe Publishers.
Second place went to Aphiwe Mabuza from Sisekelo High School, who scored 88% and walked away with a tablet from Rubicon and a hamper from Imisebe Publishers. In third place, Sakhelwe Mndzebele from St Francis High School achieved 79% and won a Redmi A5 smartphone from Rubicon alongside a hamper from Imisebe Publishers.
The competition featured twelve schools, each represented by two students from Form 3 and Form 4 (Grades 10 and 11). It unfolded over three intense rounds, culminating in a high-pressure final showdown between the top four writers vying for the coveted top three spots.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, the acting Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Training Dr Tholakele Mngometulu, praised the competition for showcasing the remarkable potential of Eswatini’s youth. Quoting His Majesty King Mswati III’s Speech from the Throne, she said:
“Education is the foundation of any nation. A nation that is educated and well-informed is more likely to achieve success in all its pursuits.”
She commended Rubicon for creating a platform that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills, stressing that these attributes are vital for national progress.
Lwazi Dlamini representing the CEO of Rubicon Media Group, a company founded under the vision of His Majesty King Mswati III, officials reaffirmed their commitment to investing in youth talent. They highlighted that the competition not only strengthened writing abilities but also built confidence, encouraged diverse perspectives, and fostered problem-solving skills among students.
“By investing in students, we are investing in the future of Eswatini and the continent,” the Rubicon representative said.
The event brought together sponsors, educators, students, and dignitaries in a celebration of young talent, collaboration, and academic excellence. With support from partners such as Computronics and Imisebe Publishers, the competition reinforced the importance of reading, writing, and open dialogue as pillars of personal and national development.
As the applause faded and the winners posed with their prizes, the message was clear: Eswatini’s young voices are strong, articulate, and ready to help shape the nation’s story.
