Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) has successfully retained its ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018 certifications, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards operational excellence, sustainability, and workplace safety.

The certification handover ceremony took place on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at Hilton Garden Inn, Mbabane, and was attended by the company’s Board and Executive Management, representatives from the DQS Group certification body, and staff members.

In his keynote address, EEC Managing Director Ernest Mkhonta highlighted that the achievement went beyond the presentation of certificates. He explained that it reflected the company’s unwavering commitment, teamwork, and resilience in advancing operational efficiency, revenue growth, environmental responsibility, and occupational health and safety. The Managing Director traced the company’s ISO journey back to 2014, when EEC first implemented these standards, recognising early on the importance of structured management systems in enhancing customer satisfaction, operational consistency, and safety performance.

He outlined how the organisation successfully transitioned to the updated ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018 standards, adopting a risk-based, process-driven approach that encouraged proactive management of compliance, strategy, and performance. The Managing Director emphasised that the integration of these three standards required collaboration at all levels, from top management providing strategic guidance to employees ensuring daily adherence. He added that structured change management initiatives, including walkabout sessions to company sites, fostered engagement, consultation, and a culture of shared responsibility for safety, health, environment, risk, and quality (SHERQ).

The Managing Director further noted that nearly 60 internal auditors now champion the integrated management system, monitoring performance and driving continuous improvement. He credited the partnership with DQS Group for providing an objective, expert lens that has strengthened the maturity and effectiveness of EEC’s management systems.

EEC Board Chairman Patrick Myeni echoed the sentiment, describing the retention of ISO certifications as a demonstration of the company’s commitment to quality service, environmental stewardship, and employee safety. He commended the management and staff for their dedication, noting that the achievement aligned with the EEC Vutsela Strategy (2022–2027), which emphasises operational excellence, innovation, and customer focus.

Speakers representing management engineers and the staff association highlighted the human effort behind the certifications, stressing that excellence is maintained through discipline, collaboration, and continuous improvement. They noted that ISO standards serve as living systems rather than mere documents, reinforcing a culture of accountability, safety, and operational reliability. The union also praised EEC for prioritising employee safety through the establishment of SHE Committees, regular safety meetings, and walkabouts, ensuring that occupational health and safety remains embedded in daily operations.

Both management and union representatives from the Swaziland Electricity Supply Maintenance and Allied Workers Union (SESMAWU) pointed out that the certifications reflected a shared commitment between staff and leadership, contributing to operational efficiency, environmental responsibility, and social accountability. They observed that EEC’s ISO-aligned systems not only improve internal processes but also support the Kingdom’s broader national development goals and Sustainable Development Goals, including reliable and sustainable energy provision.

In conclusion, EEC leadership and staff reiterated that ISO certification is an ongoing journey rather than a final destination, requiring continual vigilance, adaptation, and commitment. The Managing Director and Board Chairman expressed gratitude to all employees, auditors, management, and partners for their contributions, underlining that the company remains steadfast in its mission to power Eswatini safely, sustainably, and efficiently.

The celebration underscored EEC’s role as a national leader in energy provision, demonstrating that excellence, safety, and sustainability can coexist and flourish when a collective, disciplined approach is maintained across all levels of an organisation.
