Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS) is actively pursuing its goal of generating E16 billion in tax revenue for the 2025/26 financial year through the Bafundzise Door-to-Door campaign.
This initiative focuses on educating businesses about tax compliance to foster a better understanding of their obligations.
Campaign Progress
As of now, the campaign has made significant strides, having approached approximately 1,800 businesses in Matsapha. Notably, around 70% of these businesses are reported to be tax compliant, indicating a positive reception to the campaign.
Key Meetings and Future Plans
On May 6, 2025, ERS Commissioner General Brightwell Nkambule held a meeting with Matsapha Town Council Acting CEO Phiwa Dlamini and his management team to discuss the next phase of the campaign. The insights gained from the successful Manzini phase were shared to enhance the effectiveness of upcoming engagements in Matsapha.
Outreach and Support
The outreach efforts commenced on May 7, 2025. The campaign provides businesses with direct support and guidance in understanding their tax obligations. ERS’s Taxpayer Education Unit, represented by Cebolenkhosi Mahlalela, confirmed the proactive approach taken to engage businesses, emphasizing the importance of tax compliance.
Challenges Faced by Businesses
While the majority of businesses are compliant, the remaining 30% face challenges, primarily related to registrations. Many of these businesses do not have Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs), which is essential for tax compliance. To address this, the ERS team is committed to assisting these businesses through the registration process and providing vital information regarding tax obligations.
The Importance of Presumptive Tax
Mahlalela highlighted the concept of presumptive tax, which is calculated based on a business’s turnover and is particularly relevant for small businesses. She encouraged business owners to explore these options as they can significantly ease their tax obligations.
Conclusion
The Bafundzise Door-to-Door campaign by ERS is a commendable initiative aimed at fostering tax compliance among businesses in Eswatini. By providing education and direct support, ERS is working towards a sustainable increase in tax revenue while ensuring that businesses understand their responsibilities.
