ESWATINI ADVANCES DISABILITY RIGHTS WITH NATIONAL WORKSHOP

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, with support from the United Nations Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) programme and the Global Disability Fund (GDF) through UNFPA, convened a disability rights workshop on September 03, 2025 at Piggs Peak Hotel.

The engagement focused on the African Disability Rights Protocol (ADRP), seeking to empower persons with disabilities and strengthen advocacy for its implementation in Eswatini.

The workshop drew participants from the Ministry of Education and Training, the Human Rights Commission, the Federation of Organizations of Disabled Persons in Swaziland (FODSWA), and the National Advisory Council for Persons with Disabilities, chaired by Dr. Ngcebo Mbuli.

Key discussions included:

.Foundations and provisions of the ADRP

.Strategies to advance domestication and enforcement of the Protocol.

.Development of action plans to address human rights violations.

.Concerns over lack of reasonable accommodation.

.Delays in civil and domestic cases affecting persons with disabilities.

.Cases of land grabbing targeting vulnerable groups.

Dr. Mbuli emphasized the importance of such platforms, saying “This workshop is a crucial step in ensuring that the rights of persons with disabilities are not only recognized on paper but also enforced in practice. We must work together to remove barriers and guarantee equal opportunities for all.”

Officials noted that the meeting generated important recommendations to safeguard the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities and called for urgent follow-up to ensure implementation

The workshop was described as a significant step in aligning Eswatini’s policies with continental disability rights standards.
