Africa-Press – Eswatini. It started streaming on 4 July 2025 on cinemas and already over 300 people watched Mahlaba The Street Kid.

Over 300 people gathered to watch Mahlaba The Street Kid, a groundbreaking film produced in Eswatini by local filmmaker Liswati Zakhele Mabuza. The screening was discussed on the Kusile Breakfast Show on 8 July 2025, highlighting the film’s significance for Eswatini’s growing film industry.

Mahlaba The Street Kid was shot entirely in Eswatini and features an impressive mix of local actors and renowned South African stars including Muzi Mthabela, Sello Maake kaNcube, and Hamilton Dlamini. Producer Zakhele Mabuza shared that the film is based on a true story, bringing an authentic and emotional narrative drawn from Eswatini’s communities to the big screen.

The Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC) celebrated the film as a sign of the country’s readiness to export its stories to wider audiences. CEO Stanley Dlamini emphasized that Mahlaba offers a clear opportunity to develop local narratives:

“Emaswati are now ready to sell films produced in Eswatini to other countries and big companies working with bioskop. Mahlaba has given us an opportunity to develop stories existing in the communities. It is high time that stories in Eswatini are captured and filmed.”

He also praised the excitement surrounding the screening, calling it a proud moment to see Emaswati “aiming high and succeeding.”

Radio personality Lindelwa Mafa, who is also part of the cast, described it as an honor to work with other talented actors, saying their collaboration was essential in making the film a success.

Mahlaba The Street Kid is widely seen as a major step forward for the country’s creative industries, showcasing Eswatini’s rich storytelling traditions and the growing ambition of its film sector. The success of the screening points to a bright future for locally made films and international collaborations alike.
