Africa-Press – Eswatini. A Reciprocal External Tariff of just 10% on exports to the United States has placed Eswatini in a uniquely competitive position. As the lowest tariff in the region, this breakthrough ensures the Kingdom is the most attractive base for US-bound exports, turning a moment of uncertainty into one of opportunity.

With the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) nearing its end, many African nations face the loss of duty-free access to the US market. For Eswatini, however, the conclusion of AGOA marks not a retreat, but a springboard into fresh investment, job creation, and broader industrial growth.

“Where others may see barriers, we see doors opening,” said Manqoba Khumalo, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade. “This tariff advantage gives Eswatini the edge to not only retain jobs but to attract new industries into our economy.”

Protecting Jobs, Unlocking Growth

AGOA has been instrumental in sustaining thousands of jobs, particularly in textiles and apparel, which generated E1 208 200 000 (US$70 million) in exports to the US in 2024. Now, with the new tariff advantage, Eswatini is expected to safeguard employment while drawing in new foreign investors eager for competitive access to American markets.

Empty factory shells will instead be buzzing with life, as Eswatini’s pro-trade environment strengthens the nation’s role as a regional hub for manufacturing and exports.

Building Beyond Textiles

Government strategy goes further than preserving the textiles industry. Eswatini is deliberately expanding into agro-processing, ICT, and renewable energy, industries that can leverage the country’s infrastructure and create more inclusive growth.

By aligning with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and introducing reforms to improve the business climate, Eswatini is shaping itself into a regional leader in industrial competitiveness.

Shared Prosperity

The government stresses that the new trade environment is not just about economic statistics but about transforming livelihoods. “Our commitment is to ensure trade benefits reach every corner of Eswatini,” Minister Khumalo noted, highlighting the government’s goal of inclusive growth and nationwide opportunity.

From Challenge to Launchpad

What could have been a setback with AGOA’s expiration has instead become a launchpad for progress. With the lowest tariff in the region, Eswatini now stands ready to attract investments, expand industries, and deliver prosperity to its people.
