Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini’s young swimmers made an impressive splash at the Golfinhos Sprint Gala 2025, bringing home 10 gold and 5 silver medals after a thrilling two-day competition held in Mozambique over the weekend.
The Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA) fielded a team of 18 athletes representing Splash Swimming Club, Extreme Sports Academy, and Swimlab Club. The swimmers competed against strong contingents from Mozambique and Team Mpumalanga from South Africa.
Among the standout performers were Josea Potgieter, Kendra McNamara, Joao Nunes, Damien De Sousa, and Mduduzi Xaba, who dominated their individual events. Eswatini’s relay team also delivered a stellar performance, securing silver in the 200m freestyle relay.
ESA President Pedro Nunes commended the young athletes for their dedication and performance.
“Our athletes performed exceptionally well, showing that we’re on the right path with our young swimmers, while also highlighting areas for further growth. I encourage our coaches to continue guiding and supporting our swimmers, and I sincerely thank the parents who travel and stand by their children — your dedication makes all the difference,” said Nunes.
He further emphasised the importance of international competition in nurturing the country’s swimming talent.
“Competing outside the country is vital for an athlete’s growth. It allows our swimmers to measure their progress against their counterparts from other nations — in this case, Mozambique and Team Mpumalanga — and to gain valuable experience in long-course pools, which we currently don’t have in Eswatini,” he explained.
The Golfinhos Sprint Gala once again showcased the rising talent within Eswatini’s swimming community and the impact of the nation’s youth development programmes. With each stroke, Eswatini’s swimmers continue to demonstrate resilience, skill, and growing potential on the regional stage.
